University Admissions Fair
Recently, two university related events were held at GSN to help students become familiar with college expectations, tuitions and campus life. In the beginning of October, a representative from the University of Connecticut was on campus to present the qualities and advantages of applying for further studies in Connecticut, USA. Students had the chance to ask questions and speak directly to the representative about the different courses that are offered and opportunities for scholarships. Last Friday, high school students participated in a Virtual University Fair through Zoom, welcoming eight American universities to chat with students about the admissions process and future opportunities.
This is a crucial time for seniors who are in their last year of secondary school. GSN senior Diana Su said, “As a senior this year, I thought this virtual fair was really helpful for me. It suggested more options for me to consider through this application season. The representatives were passionate about and patient when explaining details and answering every question we asked.” Another senior, Khalil Ahangarzadeh, highlighted that "GSN’s October 2020 college fair was one to remember. We were given the special opportunity to meet with representatives in the US to gain vital information about what is inevitably going to be our future. Without this special event, I would not have as much insight in the academic arena."
”Younger students from Grades 9, 10 and 11 also showed great excitement towards the University Fair. Grade 10 Leticia Alves said that the fair helped her “understand more about the prices and about what I want to do in the future. I really enjoyed talking to the College Admission Officers because they explained all the information I needed to know!” Also from Grade 10, Bob Yang “learned that the importance of GPA is the same as SAT. The fee per year costs a lot, but it can be deduced by scholarship programs, which is dependent on my behavior in high school too.”
Grade 11 Kevin Lou said, “I always enjoy the University Fair at GSN, but especially in this situation, we had the opportunity to meet the schools online. I think the college representatives are kind and patient, they answered every question we asked and because they need to answer the same question again and again, they need a lot of patience. To meet universities online is a rare chance we can get recently, especially in the situation of COVID-19.” While some students are still becoming familiar with the idea of university life that lies ahead, this becomes a time of constant learning. Through the Zoom university fair, Grade 9 Oscar “learned about the dorm system (rules) and how to get credits and how to earn a scholarship. The subject grades affect your final grade (GPA)."
