The Power of Music
When walking through the halls of the Primary Building, one can hear singing or instruments playing in harmony. During music class, Mr. Octavio Macías, the music teacher at Georgia School, teaches musicianship, music theory, and orchestra. He has developed a three-year plan to establish the Georgia School Ningbo Youth Orchestra (GSNYO), implement music theory, and foster instrumental playing on violin, viola, cello, and bass.
On campus, Mr. Macías can be found brewing coffee when he is not practicing the viola. He has a master's degree in musicology from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University as well as an additional degree in art history. He has performed and established multiple orchestras and non-profit organizations internationally. Mr. Macías has also worked as a music educator and performer for many symphonies, most notably the El Paso Symphony Orchestra in Texas and the Ciudad Juárez Symphony in Chihuahua, Mexico. Mr. Macías is passionate about all types of music and music education.
GSN’s diverse extracurricular activities program consists of academic, sporting and artistic oriented activities. At GSN, violin, viola, cello and bass are compulsory courses to help children cultivate their sentiments and develop interests. Georgia School has employed qualified Chinese and foreign music and instrument teachers. In addition, the construction of new International Music Center was completed last year, which contains 100 piano rooms and a music recital. The school focuses on “whole-child education” to cultivate well-educated and well-rounded global citizens for the future.
