GSN Middle School Science
According to the well-known, German, fairy tale, “Rapunzel”
According to the laws of physics, considering the tensile strength of hair, Rapunzel’s weight, and the height of the tower, among many other factors, Middle School Science Teacher, Ms. Liezl Andal, and her grade 8 students determined that the use of a ‘pulley system’ would significantly increase Rapunzel’s chances of survival and her rescue from the tower. Hence, GSN grade 8 students were challenged to build and test a pulley system capable of enabling this dramatic, hair-based, rescue. Students were also required to calculate the efficiency of the system and were required to obtain at least a 50% efficiency.
Ms. Andal is well-known for her soft-spoken and gentle personality. She is also known for her knowledge of biology, physics, math and her strong “Science Kung-Fu”! Innovations in Engineering often build upon the work of earlier scientists, by adding efficiencies and innovative techniques in order to achieve new outcomes. Well done, GSN Grade 8 students, in your enhancement of Rapunzel’s original rudimentary engineering plans.
